Interested in electric vehicles (EVs) but unsure how what charger to get? No problem, in this article I will discuss my recommended home EV chargers under $600.
How to charge an EV is usually one of the first questions people ask me about my Chevy Volt. After a quick explanation, nearly all of them are surprised how easy it really is. For a complete explanation, see the two-part series: How to Charge an Electric Vehicle.
Since the vast majority of charging an EV takes place at home it really is as simple as charging a phone every night. The three things you will need to charge an EV are 1) an EV, 2) a power source (240-volt outlet preferred, but 120-volt outlet will suffice for most), and 3) an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) or more commonly known as “the charger”.
In this article, I will run through the best EV chargers under $600 based on charging speed, popularity, and capability. Let’s begin.
Here are the best electric vehicle chargers under $600:
1. Electrify America
Electrify America is more commonly known for their DC Fast Charging network. Easily, their next move was to develop a home charger. The Electrify America home charger has a stylish appearance and will definitely not be an eyesore in your garage. With a 24 foot cord, this charger has the flexibility to be installed in the corner of the garage and still reach your EV. Plus, it is UL listed.
The new Electrify America home charger is a Level 2 charger that utilizes a 240-volt outlet (specifically a NEMA 14-50 outlet). It can charge up to 7.6 kW, or In other words, it will replenish around 25 miles of range per hour of charging. Like most Level 2 chargers, expect a full recharge for a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle or all-electric) around 8 hours.
While it does not have WiFi connectivity, it can be installed indoors and outdoors thanks to its NEMA 3R rating. For some individuals, this will be handy as a garage may not always be the most practical or available parking location.
Fast Facts:
- 7.6 kW charging
- 25 miles of range per hour of charging
- Indoor/outdoor
- $449 on Amazon
2. Chargepoint
Chargepoint is more commonly known for its public and workplace EV charging solutions. However, their Chargepoint Home Level 2 charger is built with the same solid build quality and software capability as their public stations. A direct competitor to the aforementioned Juicebox, the Chargepoint is a reliable home charger for a great price.
The Chargepoint home charger is a smart/WiFi capable device. This means with a companion app on your smartphone, you can view current charging status, schedule charging for Time of Use, view energy consumption data, and more, However, to remain under the $600 budget, this Chargepoint model is limited to only 32 amps or 7.6 kW. In other words, expect this charger to provide around 25 miles of range per hour of charging.
For overnight charging, this isn’t much of a deal, however, it may matter to those looking for a quick charge while stopping intermittently at home.
Fast Facts:
- 10 kW charging
- 25 miles of range per hour of charging
- Smart/WiFi capability
- $559 on Amazon
3. Clippercreek (Level 2)
Clippercreek is notorious for its simple, rugged chargers. Like Chargepoint, Clippercreek makes public charging stations, however, Clippercreek’s chargers are not smart/WiFi capable. Instead, they are straightforward without any bells and whistles.
This model in particular chargers at 32 amps on 240 volts just like the Chargepoint. Providing around 25 miles of range per hour is solid and sufficient for most users.
Similar to the Electrify America charger, the Clippercreek can also be installed indoors and outdoors. Plus, it is Made in America. Lastly, the charger is ETL listed, similar to UL listing.
Fast Facts:
- 7.6 kW charging
- 25 miles of range per hour of charging
- Made in America
- Indoors/outdoors
- $589 on Amazon
4. Clippercreek (Level 1)
Clippercreek makes the list twice. I decided to include their Level 1 charger, that is it does not require a 240-volt outlet. Instead, it can be simply plugged into a regular 120-volt outlet found throughout your home and garage. For those who do not or cannot have a 240-volt outlet near their home parking location, a Level 1 charger is the solution.
At 120 volts and 12 amps, or 1.4 kW, this charger provides around 4 miles of range per hour. Sure it is nowhere near the other Level 2 chargers, however, for most Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), such as the Prius Prime or Honda Clarity, it will charge overnight.
For BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle or “all-electric”), like the Tesla Model 3 or Nissan Leaf, it will not fully charge overnight. However, this may not be an issue for those who drive less than 40 miles a day.
Fast Facts:
- 1.4 kW charging
- 4 miles of range per hour of charging
- Made in America
- Indoors/outdoors
- $395 on Amazon
5. Tesla Wall Connector
Finally, there is the Tesla Wall Connector. This charger is sure to impress on appearance like other Tesla products. The value of this particular charger is amazing: Level 2, up to 48 amps or 11.5 kW, around 44 miles of range per hour of charging, indoor/outdoor install, and smart/WiFi capable.
This charger can do it all for a solid price of $500. If you are shopping for or have a Tesla, this is the charger for you. If not, look to the other products as this charger, like the Tesla Superchargers, are for Teslas only.
Fast Facts:
- 11.5 kW charging
- 44 miles of range per hour of charging
- Exclusively for Teslas
- Indoors/outdoors
- $500 on Tesla.com
Closing Thoughts:
Buying a home charger is nearly as difficult as buying an EV. There are many products to choose from with different specs that you may not be familiar with. Hopefully, this article provided enough information and confidence to solve your home charging needs.
Personally, I use the Clippercreek Level 2 charger. It allows me to charge overnight on TOU with my Chevy Volt. Since the cheap electricity rates don’t begin until 9:00 PM, I only have about 9 hours of charging time.
With a Level 1 charger, this would not fully charge my PHEV for my daily commute. On the other hand, with Level 2 charging I am able to fully charge completely on the cheap electricity rates. The Clippercreek is a solid charger and is simple as plugging in and walk away. All of my TOU charging schedules are handled within my Chevy Volt infotainment screen.
